User Research

In the initial phase of the project, extensive secondary and primary research was conducted to gather insights on healthy habits and existing habit tracking apps. The competitive analysis revealed that while there are apps available for habit tracking, they often lacked intuitive usability. Users found it challenging to input new habits, and the dashboard designs were confusing, overwhelming users with excessive information.

After conducting five in-depth interviews and receiving 29 responses from an online survey within a span of just three days, we were able to gain valuable insights from both qualitative and quantitative data. The interviews provided rich, contextual understanding of users’ challenges, motivations, and aspirations related to habit formation. Simultaneously, the online survey elicited a broader range of perspectives, giving us a deeper understanding of the target audience’s preferences and pain points.

Through this combined research approach, we discovered that individuals faced tremendous difficulty in adhering to their desired habits and maintaining consistency. Forgetfulness and distractions were identified as significant barriers after only a few days of attempting to establish new habits. However, there was a resounding consensus that implementing small, incremental changes to habits could lead to substantial improvements in overall quality of life.

Among the insights garnered, the majority of participants expressed a strong desire for reminder systems to reinforce habit consistency, and an overwhelming 60% highlighted the importance of goal tracking and visual representation of progress.

These findings significantly informed the development of the TwentyOne app, ensuring that it effectively addresses user pain points by incorporating features such as habit reminders and visually engaging progress tracking. By leveraging these insights, TwentyOne seeks to empower users on their journey towards establishing and sustaining healthy habits.

Define

Having concluded the interviews and analyzed the data, we continued to refine our understanding of the target user. Anna, a 29-year-old project manager based in Frankfurt, is a career-oriented professional who values a balanced lifestyle. Despite her busy schedule in a fast-paced corporate environment, she recognizes the importance of maintaining good health and prioritizes self-care.

However, Anna often struggles to find the time and energy to focus on healthy habits due to her demanding work schedule. She lacks confidence in her ability to make significant changes and tends to procrastinate. Anna is in need of a tool that can help her establish consistent healthy habits, providing motivation, accountability, and reminders.

Based on our analysis and the problem statement, we have reached the following conclusion:

Independent post-graduate professionals need to find a way to prioritize and stick to healthy habits consistently because establishing habits is motivating and gratifying.

The conclusion we reached, as formulated in our problem statement,
is this:

Socially-conscious book enthusiasts need to find a way to get quality personalized recommendations because they are frustrated by the lack of human connection on bookshop websites.

Within the Ideation process we aimed to solve that for the user. The solution is a questionnaire that asks a number of questions as to find out what the reader is interested in and then presents a suggestion of three books tailored to the user’s interests and preferences. This would in way mimic the interaction a person has with the book staff at the physical book store and in a way be a more human interaction. This questionnaire is called the book buddy.

With this in mind the sitemap and user flow where created. Here the main emphasis was to add our book buddy as prominent as possible as to facilitate the use of it.

Based on our analysis and the problem statement, we have reached the following conclusion:

Independent post-graduate professionals need to find a way to prioritize and stick to healthy habits consistently because establishing habits is motivating and gratifying.

Ideation

During the ideation process, we gathered a range of features that could be implemented into the TwentyOne app. Some of the key ideas that emerged included goal and path tracking, inspired by the successful model used in other apps.

We also considered the importance of allowing users to create new habits and customize existing ones to better align with their individual needs and preferences. Recognizing the significance of community support, we envisioned incorporating features that would foster a sense of belonging and motivation among users, including a dedicated community feature that allows users to connect with others who are also striving to implement similar habits.

This community feature would create a space for users to share their progress, exchange tips and advice, and provide mutual support on their habit journey. Additionally, we recognized the power of visual representation in tracking progress, and proposed an illustration of a plant that grows as users cultivate their desired habits. Daily reminders to prompt habit formation and a dedicated forum with articles and tips on how specific habits can enhance one’s life were also part of our ideation process.

In addition to the visual representation of progress through the growing plant illustration, we also recognized the value of providing users with monthly statistics and insights. These statistics would offer a comprehensive overview of their habit formation, highlighting trends, patterns, and areas for improvement.

By offering a visual snapshot of their progress over time, users could gain a better understanding of their consistency and be motivated to continue their habit journey. The integration of monthly statistics would serve as a powerful tool to track and enhance consistent habit development, providing users with a clear picture of their achievements and spurring them on towards their goals. These features collectively aimed to create a comprehensive user experience, combining personalized habit tracking, community engagement, visual motivation, and educational resources.

Prototyping & User Testing

During the prototyping phase, we began with low-fidelity wireframes that focused on the “must-have” features of the app, including the ability to add new habits, the visual representation of progress through the growing plant, and the article forum for in-depth habit-related content. We conducted three concept tests to gather feedback from users and refine the design. Through these tests, we discovered that the combination of the plant and path tracking was confusing for users, as it didn’t provide clear navigation and understanding of their progress. It became evident that the interface for modifying habits should be more intuitive and user-friendly, as participants expressed difficulty in making changes to existing habits.

Furthermore, the interface for navigating between habits and goals proved to be confusing for users, highlighting the need for clearer pathways and improved navigation. These valuable insights from user testing guided us in making necessary adjustments and refining the prototype for a more seamless and user-centric experience. With the insights gained from the low-fidelity wireframes and user testing, we proceeded to refine the design in the mid-fidelity wireframes. Keeping the user feedback in mind, we made significant changes to address the challenges identified. One notable addition was the inclusion of a weekly calendar view, allowing users to visualize their habits on a shorter time frame.

These additions provided users with multiple perspectives on their habits, enabling them to track their consistency more effectively.Another improvement was made on the “add habit” page, where we implemented a mechanism for selected habits to disappear from the available options. By doing so, we streamlined the experience, ensuring that users wouldn’t accidentally select the same habit multiple times. The mid-fidelity wireframes not only incorporated these necessary modifications but also laid the foundation for an enhanced and user-friendly interface.

On the dashboard, users will have an overview of the habits they are currently tracking, allowing them to easily see their progress and mark habits as done. This feature provides a clear visual representation of their habit journey and helps to keep them accountable. Additionally, users will receive reminders in the form of notifications, prompting them to perform their habits at the scheduled times. This serves as a helpful tool in maintaining consistency and ensuring that users stay on track with their desired habits throughout the day.Having perfected the features we defined the style of the app.

In line with the brand attributes of being motivating, inspiring, fresh, and focused on self-care, we made deliberate design decisions to create an inviting and friendly user experience. The chosen colors were carefully selected to convey a sense of freshness and optimism, instilling a positive and uplifting feeling within the app.The overall design aims to motivate users to maintain their habits by providing a visually appealing and encouraging environment. With a combination of vibrant and soothing elements, the design seeks to inspire users to embrace self-care and continue their habit-building journey with enthusiasm and determination. The user interface and visual aesthetics work in harmony to foster a positive and supportive atmosphere, encouraging users to stay motivated and engaged with their habits.

Final Product

Finally, we proceeded to the high-fi prototype stage, where we centered our efforts on creating a visually appealing and functional design for the TwentyOne app. By incorporating the feedback gathered from previous testing phases, we refined the user interface to offer a seamless and engaging experience for habit tracking.

This involved implementing features such as personalized habit recommendations, intuitive navigation, and a streamlined process for adding and tracking habits. The high-fi prototype was meticulously crafted to ensure that users can easily navigate within the app, receive personalized recommendations, and have a visually pleasing and motivating interface to support their habit-building journey.

Whats next

Moving forward, our next steps involve adding the Community forum feature to facilitate user interaction and support. We will also expand the frames to show progress and completion of habits, providing users with a more comprehensive visual representation of their journey. Additionally, we will continue conducting usability testing to gather valuable feedback and make further refinements to perfect the app’s user experience. Once the app is polished and refined, our ultimate goal is to launch it and assist users in successfully completing their habits, empowering them to live healthier and more fulfilling lives.
